WTC
"Frenchie" & Owner Reunited!
Thanks to eagle-eyed GVFBA member Hannah Brand, the wandering WTC "French Bulldog" (see original e-mail on right) has been re-united with his very grateful owners, Adrian and Patty. Actually, the pup, named Leon, is really a Pug but given the circumstances we are going to forgive him for that. (Evidently, Patty was walking Leon near their apt downtown when the towers came down. As she ran for her life, Leon got lost in the mayhem.) This is a nice bit of bright news in an otherwise grim period and it's pretty much all owed to Owen Masiello, the person who found Leon wandering in the rubble and rushed him out of the chaos, and Hannah who saw the missing poster in Tribeca and recognized him from the pictures we posted here on the site. We'll invite Owen, Adrian, Patty and, especially, Leon, to join us at the next get-together. Hopefully we'll be hearing more stories like this in the weeks to come. |
Original E-mail sent to the GVFBA on Sept 12: Hi. Yesterday during the collapse of the towers a french bulldog was found in the wall street area by one of the people who hid from the rubble in a building with me. He didnt think he would be able to take care of him or didnt have anyinterest in it so I am watching him. I was hoping that you may have an idea of who might have lost a french bulldog in the area. he doesnt have any tags but im sure the owner could indentify his collar and leash. I am keeping this short because I want to take him to the vet just to make sure he didnt inhale anything while I was carrying him home across the bridge and through manhattan. He seems to be alright but I know my chest and throat are not at 100% so considering this breeds breathing problems Im going to take him to be on the safe side. Im going to try to attach a pictur of myself and him if I can get this damn webcam to work. please be in touch if you have any ideas as to whose this dog is. I am more than willing to continue caring for him. He is the most amazing dog, I can definetly see why this breed inspires the devotion clearly seen on your website if he is indicative at all of a typical french bulldog. Honsetly after seeing what he was doing yesterday as the world was going crazy and spending the past day with him as my constant companion I love him so if his owner cant be found I would love to keep him. I thank you for your help and im sure the owner does as well. owen masiello |

Congratulations Pace! Well, it was certainly a close, tense and, occasionally, xenophobic competition, but with the tally now complete, our crack team of electoral officials down in Florida have determined that local hero Pace squeaked ahead of his Dutch challenger, Charlie the Wonder dog, in our first annual "Who's the Frenchier Frenchie?" contest. The final score found a hairsplitting 192 votes for Pace beating out the 159 ballots cast for Charlie. As promised, Pace and his four Frenchie siblings will be sharing a bottle of authentic French Vino at our first ever GVFBA Wine Tasting Play Date this summer (stay tuned for details!). We'd like to thank everyone who took part in the excitement, especially those who posted their thoughtful opinions on the poll (see excerpts to the right). Got an idea for a provocative GVFBA poll? Let us know.

The 2001
GVFBA Frenchiest Frenchie showdown was a heated affair that unearthed
dormant international wounds, often pitting staid Old World values against
upstart New World flamboyance. A few of the voices heard: "Shouldn't we be voting for our favorite Hillary hairstyle? Or was that last decade?" "Why do we have to call them "Frenchies" it makes them sound like a poodle. yuck! I like to refer to my "French Bulldog" as the "Frenchman" If I hold my pug's ears up in the air, she looks just like Pace." "I'm sorry to disagree with you all, but Millie was born in France, walks regularly under the Eiffel Tower and the gardens of Versailles. She is the Frenchiest amongst your American beauties! But they're all magnificent!" "I want Charlie as my personal guru!" |

Clothing
Conundrum.
Dear GVFBA, My girlfriend very much wants to get a French Bulldog. I am all for it -- we frequently baby-sit GVFBA member Ruby Moritz who is a complete gem -- but I have one major concern. I have heard that in the winter months they have to wear a sweater. While I am very much comfortable with my masculinity, I fear I will never be caught dead walking a dog dressed up like a Greek fisherman (or, worse, Sonny Bono). My question is this: Do French Bulldogs really need to wear sweaters or is this just an unfortunate fashion statement? Sincerely, Will Hines |

Mail. Ready to lick the last straw and convince your friends that you truly do require psychiatric help? Why not get your favorite little flat face printed up on address labels! A dear woman by the name of Beverly Mills (CUSHMANIAC@aol.com) provides this excellent service at the reasonable price of $11 for around six sheets. As always, tell her the GVFBA sent you. |

Oh. So you've got the address labels and your friends still aren't convinced that you've gone over the edge? Despair not. This should do the trick. Can you say Flat Faced Visa? |

| June 2. 2001 | Art. From 11-year-old GVFBA member, Madeline Marcus: My little dog Lulu, she is soft and black. Sometimes she looks like she's pouncing like a cat. She loves to go out on the street or to the park, she does not like it when it's cold or dark. She loves to sleep
during the night or day, but then she wakes up and wants to play! As she lies there,
like a round loaf of bread, I wonder what goes on in her little black
head. --Madeline Marcus |

| June 2. 2001 | From
the Too Much Disposable Income Department. I am a small bookstore owner in Maine and I thought some of your members might be interested in knowing that I have a lovely copy of The French Bulldog: History and History of the Origin of the Breed, Its Cultivation and Development. This is the 1926 first edition in very good condition, dark blue cloth-covered boards with a line drawing of Frenchie in gold on the front cover. It is clean and tight and if not for lightly bumped corners, would be Fine. This rare book is priced at $450. Anyone interested can contact me at www.ruecottage.com. Sincerely, Nicols Fox Rue Cottage Books |

Fan Mail Dear GVFBA, I get the distinct impression you just don't like me. I am the prettiest bulldog you have ever seen (that is what my mommy says and my mommy is always right) and my mom has send you loads of pictures and information on me a dozens of times and I am still not on the site. No fair! Is there a rule against Dutch Frenchies for being on the site???? My life is hard enough as it is because my mommy won't take me to the forest because of the hoof and mouth disease, she says. I don't even have a hoof!!!!!!!!!! -Charlie the Dutch Wonder dog P.S.: That Pace looks like a closet pug to me! |
Bring it On! Dear GVFBA, So this Dutch woman thinks Pace is a closet Pug? Pace says "Hah!" to that comment (in his best Stanley Kowalski imitation). He is all Frenchie and damn proud of it! -Diane McNulty |

Mail, Part Deux. Byron, Oliver, and I absolutely love the new site! We all moved to Austin, TX, in the fall of 1999 from Perry Street, and there aren't too many Frenchies this far south -- too hot! Ollie loves that he has a place to go online to see photos of all of his oldest pals and reminisce about his days back in the old neighborhood and keep up with the latest Frenchie news and trends. Keep up the good work! Ollie sends a big snort out to all his buddies in the Village. Wishing we were there, Chris White, formerly of 117 Perry St. |

There is a missing French Bulldog puppy in the neighborhood. Click here to help join the search now. |

| March 2001 | Blurb. So big deal, Drew Barrymore's Lab/Chow smelled a fire and saved her life. We know a Frenchie who snoozed through her last four movies. Now, that's a hero! In any case, it was nice to see GVFBA-member, Jenny Seeche, and JC Corso's everythingbutthepup.com get mentioned in the ensuing New York Post coverage. In case you missed it, check it out here and then go to our French Market for the lowdown on JC's wonderfully luxurious puppy collection. | |
| March 2001 | For the Truly Lucky Puppy. JC Corso just launched her unbelievably swanky puppy kit line named after our very own GVFBA member, Gryphon. What new little Frenchie couldn't use a super-soft microfleece blankey or squeaky hedgehog? Check out our French Market for more info. | |

Fan Mail, Part Trois "For 13 years I lived on the corner of 5th Ave. and 9th St. I went to NYU film school and later NYU Grad school, shopped at Balduccis and loved the color of the buildings as the sun went down. I moved to CA and lived to regret it, but in the 10 years I have been here, I have amassed a family of 4 Frenchies. When I saw the Halloween parade on TV this year, I SCREAMED and CRIED when I saw your contingent!!!!! You can't even imagine how much I miss living in the Village and how much I would love to be walking with the "cool kids" in the parade with my wild brood. I want to be a member, even though I live at the beach in CA., my heart is SO with you. Give all the members my love and know that I wish I could be with you right now!!!!!" --Belinda |

| March 2001 | Top Model. Check out the sexy little b@*#h in this PetSmart ad. Rumor has it she was an ugly duckling in high school who would occasionally vomit after eating. |
