The French Bulldog's guide to downtown New York City

Pet Stores
Fetch
43 Greenwich Avenue @ Charles
(212) 352-8591
Who doesn't love Fetch? Is it the best pet gift store in NYC? Quite possibly. Sure, it's on the pricier side, but you didn't buy a Fr. Bulldog to be cheap now, did ya? Alex, the owner, is extra-sweet and her Newfoundland, Ali, is a sight as well (despite the fact that he really seems to have a crumb in his butt regarding GVFBA-member, Ruby Moritz). Fetch carries a full line of George and Wagwear stuff that your more stylish pups will thank you for.
Vets
West Chelsea Veterinary Hospital
203 Tenth Avenue @ 22nd Street
212-645-2767
In a word: Friendly. In a second word: Awesome. They may be off the beaten path, but it's worth the hike to Dr. Farber and his staff of super-nice vets and support staff. They've got an amazing reputation and, after Gramercy Park Vet, they probably treat the most Frenchies in the neighborhood. Prices are reasonable and the front desk people really know their stuff so basic questions don't need to wait for a vet to get back to you. No question is too stupid. If you're dealing with a specialist like, say, an eye surgeon, they personally follow up and consult about the procedures. Last minute appointments are practically always granted. Added bonus: If you've got insurance, they'll even printout submitable forms for you with your policy info in place.
Gramercy Park Animal Hospital
37 E. 19th Street @ Park
212-477-4080
Dr. Kuhlman is a local legend. Everybody seems to go to him -- including a ton of French Bulldogs --and his reputation is impeccable. Unfortunately, the crowd in the waiting room reflects it, along with the difficulty in booking last-minute appointments. The front desk staff is, for the most part, strictly secretarial so almost any question or request has to be fielded by one of the vets when they have a free moment. If you're the hypodchondriacal type with a need for a Bat-line to your vet, this may present a problem.
Dr. Richard Joseph
Animal Medical Center
63rd Street & York Ave.
212-838-8100

Animal General
87th and Columbus, 212-501-9600
2nd Office
140 W 67 Street
212-712-9600.
From GVFBA member Fran Prince:
Dr Howell and  his entire staff are terrific!!  Each pet now has a primary care physician to  tend to their needs.  The offices are open 7 days a week and there is 24 hour nursing care. Appointments are well scheduled, but they will always make room for an emergency!! I live on the east side in mid-town and have been going there for 20 years. It is worth the trip. And Dr Jane Kazofsky (many may recognize the name) does the surgery for other vets in the city, Her sole function is surgery and she is great.  A great  activity is puppy playtime; for an uninocculated frenchie (or any puppy) supervised play with other puppies (that are also patients) before they can go outside. A great thing for the up and the tired puppy parent).
Training
Andrea Arden
ardenpets@aol.com
If you're like 98.9% of the American population, you spend 67% of you day dreaming of three things: (1) World peace, (2) A diet soda that doesn't taste like a plastic bag and (3) Being reincarnated as Katie Couric. With that in mind, why not do the next best thing and take your dog to the same trainer as Mrs. C -- Andrea Arden
Alternative Healing
Acupuncture
Dr. Phillip Raclyn
Riverside Veterinary Group
219 West 79th Street
212-787-1993
After Kafka wound up with a slipped disk and couldn't walk for three days, we searched out a veterinary acupuncturist at the urging of fellow members. Our search lead to Dr. Phillip Raclyn, DVM, CVA. Kafka had about 6 acupuncture (now monthly) treatments with Dr. Raclyn. And he stays on two vitamin supplements. Two months later you'd never know anything ever happened. You can find info on Dr. Raclyn at www.holisticvets.com. Be assured your dog doesn't feel a thing. But just in case you were wondering, Dr. Raclyn isn't shy about testing acupuncture needles on his patient's owners...but only if you ask!
Massage
Hadley
www.luvyerpet.com
212-802-5488
Hadster212@aol.com
Hadley is the best. In addition to walking dogs in the neighborhood (see below) and making Ruby Moritz's favorite treats (see below), she's trained in the art of Swedish Doggie Massage. Now, we now what you're thinking, but give it a shot before you snicker. How good does it feel when healing hands rub down your body? Uh huh. Now why shouldn't your pooch share the love? Check out her web site for details: luvyerpet.com
Walkers & Sitters
Hadley

Highly recommended. Hadley walks Ruby Moritz twice a day and occasionally even gives her booty a rub (see above). Super reliable, nice, easy to get ahold of, she really cares about the dogs she takes care of and has a great reputation around the neighborhood.

Woofstock Acres
www.bednbiscuit.com
From GVFBA member Shelley Davis:
I just wanted to let everyone know that Woofstock Acres, a summer retreat for dogs to escape from the concrete jungle and get some fresh air and blue skies, has just reopened for the summer season. It is located just outside of Woodstock, has almost an acre of grass, trees and bushes all securely fenced in and welcomes all sweet dogs. Transportation leaves from Greenwich Village and takes approximately 2-3 dog up for long weekends of fun and frolick! There are no cages and your dog gets to live as part of a family, even partaking in homemade organic chicken soup! Anyone in the GVFBA will receive a $5 discount coupon if you mention that you saw this email. You can get more information by going to www.bednbiscuit.com I hope that everyone is enjoying this amazing spring weather. It was so nice up in Woodstock last weekend. It took the strenghth of 100 horses to return to the city!!!!
Drinking and Dining
Chibi's Bar
238 Mott Street
Chibi's is named after its owner's Frenchie, Chibi. Chibi's likeness is painted on an outside wall.
Shopping
Note: There are two types of stores in this city -- the kind that look at your dog and say, 'How cute! Let him/her walk around! Does he/she want a cookie?' And then there are the kind that take one look at the bat ears on your baby and say 'Scram!' So the next time you're faced with a corner deli that says no-go to your pup, walk that extra block and buy your rice cakes at a Frenchie-friendly grocer instead. It's time we took it to the streets, man! Fight the power with your wallet and demand equal shopping rights for all God's creatures. Word!
Old Navy
6th Avenue @ 18th Street
Broadway @ Spring
Who knew that in addition to selling really cheap polar fleece pull-overs, the Gap's little sister also has an official dog-friendly shopping policy.

What else can we say? You come home with a happy, squeaky clean dog and some biscuits too. Beverly's is a good pit-stop on hot days. In the summer, there's always a trough of H2O outside.
